Islam - What Does It Mean To You?

Do we see Islam as something we are born with or something we acknowledge to be our

choice, or is it a cult you have often heard of as associated with ancient Arab customs

from the East?

Despite the bad publicity and excessive criticism, people of the Western world are

converting to Islam by large numbers; especially students. Before the “claimed” terrorist

attacks, Islam was not as popular as it is now. In fact, the negative media attraction

has actually drawn people who previously were strangers to this religion to explore and

discover its true wisdom. Previous estimates have placed the number of Muslim converts

living in the UK at between 14 000 and 25 000, but a recent study by the inter-faith think-

tank ‘Faith Matters’ suggests the real figure could be as high as 100 000, with as many as 5

000 new conversions nationwide each year.

A liberated country, with “equality” and “women’s rights”, a country that condemns the

Islamic way of life, yet England has citizens converting to Islam by the minute!

Many governors say Islam contradicts the Western way of living, yet converts say that

Islam is compatible and feel no strain in their choice of becoming a Muslim.

As a university student surely your life will be constricted if one was to adhere and commit

to Islam? There must be a bigger incentive for converting individuals that brings them

towards Islam. What is it that attracts them?

For a university student, Islam enlightens the individual. It encourages education as

well as building a structure within daily life through self-discipline. The principles of

Islam further develop a person and provide them with a new perspective on life as well

as various skills and abilities e.g. a new focus towards a complete way of life, spiritual

awakening, a vast network of support, true women’s rights, equality between the races,

rich intellectual heritage and much more!

There are so many reasons why individuals come to believe Islam is the right path for

them, but every individual has their own specific reason for converting. Their story may

not be the same as anyone else’s but each person’s life brings a change, personal to one’s

own experience.
